There is so much talk on the internet about developing friends on facebook, twitter and other social media. Many people tout the social media as being a great way to find people to develop relationships with, or a circle of "friends" to market to. I sometimes think that the most important reason for having accounts with the social media is overlooked.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is something we all should strive for when marketing. As much as it is wonderful to have a following on Twitter or Facebook, there is nothing that can take the place of a surfer who found your website through a search engine. I know what I am talking about. Since Waiora launched their WaiFIT weight management products, I have managed to have my www.WeighFit.com site at number 1 position in Google for the search term WaiFIT. I even come in ahead of the corporate site WaiFIT.com, and for Waiora Waifit I rank #2 (although I am working on that. )

Why is that important?

Search engine placement is crucially important for anyone who is building an online business. When talking about WaiFIT, in keeping with my example, consider that a few people worldwide who search for waiFIT are searching because a distributor told them about it. Those people landing on my site are likely going to go back to their distributor friend to order. What about those people who heard about it from a friend of a friend, or through someone’s advertising. (Believe it or not, there are people who advertise without offering clear directions to people on how to find them). I get a lot of traffic from those sources every day BECAUSE I am in the #1 or #2 position on Google.

This is very good for business now, but consider that the product only launched a few weeks ago. If I continue to work on my SEO (search engine optimization) imagine the traffic a year from now when hundreds of people have had positive weight loss experience using WaiFIT.

Ok, so this brings me back to my topic..

Using Social Media for SEO

We’re not talking about gathering a bunch of strangers to market to. I am simply referring to links that appear on facebook, twitter or other high traffic. It’s as simple as that! Google LOVES social media because they get HUGE amounts of traffic. Since Google strives to provide relevent search results, it makes sense that their robots will actually find and index your site faster if the link is on a social media site, and it will also give your link a heavier weight, than if it is found on a site that gets little to no traffic.

The idea isn’t to tweet your link, although tweeting your link WILL help google find your page. What you really want is to put your clickable link right in your profile. Create a facebook profile, a myspace profile, a DIGG and a Stumble profile… place your link and description in all of these profiles… and don’t overlook the power of Technorati, and Blog Catalogue if you have a blog. so the next time you are tweeting, remember that QUALITY is king whether talking the size of your networks OR link backs for SEO.

If everyone valued quality as much as Google does, there wouldn’t be a need for 23,087 followers!

 Goodbye Michael

Today the world said goodbye to a wonderful father, a much loved brother and son, a sweet "child inside a man’s body" and one of the most incredible artists who has ever lived. Michael Jackson reached into the hearts of more people, through his music and dancing/entertainment than anybody ever in the last 2009 years.

I grew up with Michael Jackson, as so many of us did, and nearly every one of his songs brings a flood of emotion to me… not because of him of course but because his music was so much a part of those memories that I treasure. Memories of friends, and family, school, and long weekends, and summer camping trips. I can’t listen to any of his music without remembering some part of my life I had forgotten about.

That was the power of Michael Jackson. It wasn’t the boy, or the man, or the performances as much as it was that he wove himself into the fabric of our lives, and he was there at EVERY stage. Some artists were there during elementary school, others during highschool, and yet others during college… different singers again at my wedding, and during the birth of my children…. a new group accompanied me on my runs as I lost what I had gained from those babies… There was music when my mom got sick, and when Jim’s cousin died… but Michael was there for ALL of those events. All of them. Every song reminds me of a different piece of my life.

I feel sad that he won’t be with me to share what is to come of my life.

I was sad I was only able to catch the end of the service. As soon as it comes out on DVD I will have it.

This is the BEST thing to EVER happen to me!

It’s called FLOCK. It’s a NEW (to me) browser by Mozilla (makers of Firefox) and it is a HEADY experience. As we speak (write!) I am posting this blog post from my desk top.  So I know to some of you that is no biggie, but GET THIS… FLOCK has integrated just about everything you could possibly need as an online marketer all in one.

I can tweet from my address bar without visiting twitter, I know when I get a new email without logging in to Yahoo, I can blog without going to my blog, I can interface with friendfeed, youtube, facebook, digg, stumble, delicious… you name it FLOCK does it!

Using Twhirl for Friendfeed and Twitter, and Flock for EVERYTHING (and I do mean everything) else and I think I am (all of a sudden) going to love Twitter a whole lot more and save myself GOBS of time in the process.

The Beach at Treasure Island

Jim and I just got back from our vacation and convention in Florida. Oh it was so amazing. My friend and business partner Donna set us up in a place on Treasure Island which is on the Gulf Of Mexico… a strip of barrier islands on the western coast of Florida.

That’s a picture of the beach! How beautiful. You know, it’s interesting but I never knew Florida had that fine powdery white sand like you find in the Caribbean. How wonderful (especially for a Canadian) to bury your toes in the beach in March!

In fact it was so wonderful that I have decided to spend 3 months there next year. The beauty of working from home is that home is where-ever I want it to be.

I’ve already rented a condo on the beach for next January. (It’s a 3 bedroom so if you want to come and stay a week, just let me know!) and Jim and I have agreed to find a condo we can have year round.

I am so happy about that. I have been complaining bitterly about the Canadian winters for so long now!! It will be wonderful to finally be able to live the way I want.

As an aside, this wouldn’t be possible if I had a REAL J.O.B. like so many people do.

 I am TOTALLY bored!!

I know I said I was going to spend some time getting to know twitter, and understanding what this ‘following’ is all about, but I JUST don’t get it.

I love the internet, and I love interacting with people, and I love new sites, and old sites, and reading interesting material, and blogging. I love ALL of those things.. I am a total internet junkie in every sense of the word.

I just can’t get into this TWITTER thing.

I’ve tried to talk to people. I’ve waited for an answer. I’ve dropped in with little responses to other people’s conversations, and I’ve watched other people talking back and forth. I’ve seen my friends become total twitter twits, chatting back and forth from their i-phones and blackberries, and I’m like…. "OOOOOHHHH look a spider. Look at the pretty web and how the sun dances around the strands" and when I look back 28 more sentances have twitted past the screen and I am lost again.

I’m a smart chickie (if I don’t say so myself). what am I MISSING? How can other people solve all the world’s problems in short little sentences and I can’t even say hello in the allotted space. How do other people (claim to) build a huge business from their following on twitter and I can’t see any business being done. No SERIOUSLY, are y’all doing BUSINESS on twitter?? I can not seem to say anything interesting in one sentence. Heck I can barely get to the point in an essay.

I really really WANT to be a twit on twitter like everyone else, but visiting twitter has become a chore for me, and one I do less and less. Is anyone else having this experience? I would LOVE to know what you think….
